Competitions and Awards, 2002-2003 School Year

Congratulations to Danielle Miller, Laura Cunningham and Emma Call, eighth graders Roland Park, for winning first place in the regional contest for the 2003 Future Citites Competition. They competed against schools from Maryland, Washington, DC and Virginia. To compete, the students were required to create a model city using the Sim City computer game, then build a three-demensional model of their city. They also made an oral presentation to a panel of engineers and architects, who selected their city as the winner. For their efforts, Danielle, Laura and Emma have earned a four-night stay at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Washington DC. They will represent Roland Park Middle School at the national Future Cities Competition, which will be held February 16-19, 2003 during Engineers Week.

Congratulations to Andrew J. Katona who won second prize in the 24th Annual (2002) University of Maryland High School Mathematics Competition.

Andrew took part in the first round on Wednesday, October 23, 2002 and advanced to the second round on Wednesday, December 4, 2002. Andrew then placed second in the state!
