JUNE 2007

On June 16th, Black Professional Men , Inc. (BPM) honored three Ingenuity seniors, Brandon Demory, Brandon Jones and Jerimiah Cross, as new BPM Scholars for 2007.  The young men are taking yet another step in their future to enter college.

The Rays of Hope Awards are given to outstanding African-American men who have excelled in their professions, and who serve as role models to younger Black men and boys. Awards are given in the categories of education, government, medicine, business, religion, and community and charitable services. The Rays of Hope Breakfast allows Black Professional Men to give young African-American Men, from the Baltimore area, emotional and financial support, in their higher educational pursuit.

r Lynna Nguyen is a recipient of the 2007 Maryland Science Center Dr. H. Bentley Glass Scholarship.

Ingenuity at Poly juniors Anne Juan and Michael Mountain scored a perfect 800 on Math SAT 2; senior Aaron Jones is the first Ingenuity student to score a perfect 800 on SAT 2 US History Exam!

APRIL 2007

Maryland Math League
Ingenuity team won a second place in the 2006-07 Maryland Math League contest, and Joel Wheatley with 31 cumulative points (out of 36) is #8 on the list of high scoring students.

Ingenuity at Poly students did great in the Maryland History Day contest. Shauna Linn, Lynna Nguyen, Theohariti Sevdalis, and Gregory Rossman  took 1st place in the Senior Group Documentary category for their project - J. Robert Oppenheimer: A Man of Science, A Soul in Turmoil. Tamara Elashvili took 1st place in Senior Individual Performance for her play Our Land of Israel Our Golda. This is the second top honor for Tamara who was part of the 1st place Group Performance team from last year. Additionally, Jackee Okoli earned a special prize for Women's History, which was presented by the Women's Studies Department at the University of Maryland College Park.  Jackee's Individual Documentary was entitled In the Name of Honor: The Tragedy of Honor Killings in Modern Pakistan.
National History Day is an exciting way for students to study and learn about historical issues, ideas, people and events. This year-long educational program fosters academic achievement and intellectual growth.  In addition to acquiring useful historical knowledge and perspective while developing entries and competing in a series of district, state and national contests, students develop critical thinking and problem solving skills that will help them manage and use information now and in the future.
 

2007 Maryland Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. Presenters: Ingenuity at Poly students Taylor Beckham, Emma Call, Laura Carson, Rohan Hughes, Rachel McCandliss and Danielle Miller.

2007 Maryland Wood Bridge Challenge. Ingenuity at Poly students did great! 1st Place - Chris Harris and Wuqiong Fan, 2nd Place - Christopher Lowe, Terica McClain and Rebecca Adelstein.

5 Ingenuity at Roland Park students received honorable mention awards at the 4th Annual Johns Hopkins University Physics Fair. They also received books from Barnes and Noble.

Different demonstration sections were set up in areas such as electricity, mechanics and magnetism. Students watched demonstrations and participated in experiments in these specific areas while listening to the demonstrator's explanations of the physics involved. The fair included Physics Challenge and Physics Bowl competitions.

MARCH 2007
Ingenuity sophomores Hannah Bands, Annabel Boeke and Saliou Ndao have been selected by the judges to receive a 2007 Toshiba/NSTA* ExploraVision Honorable Mention Award for their idea of a futuristic energy platform called Helianthus Potentia. The Honorable Mention award placed our team's project among the top 10% of all ExploraVision entries submitted to the competition this year. Our students ware commended for a job well done in demonstrating innovative thinking in their exploration of science and its impact on technology and the future.

Ingenuity at Poly senior, Danielle Weissman, is a USA Bio Olympiad semifinalist. She is among the top 500 participants nationwide eligible to take the Semifinal Exam.

Morgan State Science, Mathematics and Engineering Fair, Junior Division. Ingenuity at Roland Park 8th-graders won all three places for engineering and first place for Team Project, Mount Royal's Ilenna Jones won 3rd place in the physics category, and many more:

Emma Call, Intel STS 2007 winner!

The Intel Science Talent Search, the nation's most prestigious pre-college science competition, announced that Ingenuity Project senior Emma Call is a 10 th place winner among the nation's most talented your scientists. Emma Call is Baltimore's first woman to win the coveted prize, and she earned a $20,000 scholarship for her work. The Ingenuity Project's students have been named Intel winners in each of the past three years. Prior to this winning streak, Baltimore Public School students had not placed in the competition since 1958. In 2005, Ingenuity student Ryan Harrison was a winner in the competition, placing fifth overall nationally, the first student from a Baltimore city public school to achieve such distinction since 1958. In 2006, Abe Davis placed seventh nationwide.


Roland Park Middle School Science Team consisting of Ingenuity 7th graders placed 2nd at the regional Science Bowl competition. The team included Michael Tonchev (captain), John Beck, Lydia Cornett, Doriya Bolton, and Hayley Webb; coaches: Kathy Bacon and Deirdre Lindsey. The games were held at the University of Maryland's Patriots Technology Center and included 8 teams from across Maryland and Pennsylvania.

FEBRUARY 2007
Emma Call, Ingenuity senior, David Nelson, Ingenuity at Poly Research Coordinator, and Dr. David Gracias, Emma's mentor, were awarded citations by the Maryland State Advisory Council on Gifted and Talented Education.
They were among those lauded for their worthy contributions as outstanding students and educators working with special populations in gifted education. Emma was awarded in recognition of her achievements in gifted education, and David was recognized for his contribution as educator in developing talents of Maryland students in gifted education.

Three Ingenuity at Poly students, the winners of AMC 12, qualified to take the American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME):
Michael Mountain (102.0 points), Christian Wisner-Carlson (100.5 points) and Joel Wheatley (97.5 points). Christian Wisner-Carlson received a Young Student Certificate of Achievement score 90+. Annabel Boeke is an AMC 10 School Winner.

Ingenuity at Roland Park Math Team placed 1st in Baltimore City and 3rd in Maryland MATHCOUNTS competition with Lawrence Wand as top scorer on the team.
Two Ingenuity math teams, Roland Park and Mt. Royal, participated in MATHCOUNTS, which is a national mathematics competition for sixth, seventh and eight grade students with the purpose of increasing enthusiasm for and enhancing achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the United States. Developed in 1983 as the first nationwide program of its kind, MATHCOUNTS combines the efforts of volunteers, educators, industry sponsors, the government and the technology community to promote math excellence among middle school students. The winning team: Abina Apaw, Caryn Carson, Alexander Katona, Lawrence Wang, Michael Tontchev, coaches Yelena Schwartz and Maya Spicinetskiy.


JANUARY 2007

University of Maryland Mathematics Competition
Ingenuity junior Michael Mountain is a winner of the University of Maryland Math Competition in the City of Baltimore.
There were 264 participants in the State of Maryland who qualified for Part 2 of the contest and 4 of them were Ingenuity at Poly students Michael Mountain, Joel Wheatley, Michael Denchev and Lynna Ngueyen. Ingenuity at Poly placed 9th overall in the contest out of more than 2500 schools!

Intel Science Talent Search

 
Emma Call, the Ingenuity at Poly senior, is a finalist of the Intel Science Talent Search!

40 finalists were chosen from 300 semifinalists. There were total 1,705 entrants from all over the country representing 486 schools. Emma's project, entitled "Self-Assembling, Three Dimensional Microcontainers for Cell Encapsulation," utilizes micro-engineering to create 200 micron metallic cubes. These microcontainers she has fabricated may be used to encapsulate foreign cell lines that will be implanted into the body and release genes, insulin, or hormones someone's body is unable to produce.
Each of the semifinalists receives $1,000. Poly also receives an award of $1,000 for a semifinalist named in the Intel STS. The award will be used to further support excellence in science, math, or engineering education at Poly. Each of the finalists receives $5,000 and a notebook computer. Emma is the fourth Ingenuity student in three years to be named an Intel semi-finalist and the third to be named a finalist.

Maryland Math League
8 Ingenuity at Poly students solved all the problems with a perfect score in a Maryland Math League, High School Contest 3 on January 9, 2007.

DECEMBER 2006

On December 7, 2006 ten Ingenuity students were inducted to the William R. King Chapter of the National Honor Society.

Siemens Westinghouse Competition
Emma Call, an Ingenuity at Poly senior, is the Siemens Westinghouse Competition semifinalist!
The Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology recognizes remarkable talent early on, fostering individual growth for high school students who are willing to challenge themselves through science research. Through this competition, students have an opportunity to achieve national recognition for science research projects they complete in high school.
