Three middle schools and one high school serve as the sites for the Ingenuity Project®.
Each of these schools has specifically designated classrooms for the Ingenuity Project®. These classrooms are equipped with computers, laboratory equipment, manipulatives, and a resource science/math library, selected by Ingenuity teachers.
1. MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM
The flagship 6th grade classes for the Ingenuity Project® started in the 1994-95 school year. Since then, the Project has been building and fine-tuning the curriculum and procedures. Students graduating from the middle school program are well prepared for high school with approximately 95% attending the high school of their choice.
Science
The Ingenuity Middle School science curriculum is designed to incorporate major principles throughout a three-year sequence. Although specific topics are used as an organizing framework, themes are referred to wherever they impinge on the subject matter under consideration. Included at every level are the processes of scientific research: how do we know what we know and how is it possible to find approaches to new questions. In every grade, students must tackle research problems--first as an entire class, then in small groups, and finally, by individual investigation.
Examples of principles are:
- Interaction of matter and energy
- Kinetic-molecular theory of matter
- Unity and diversity in living things
- Change over time: in the universe, in the earth, and in living things
Organizing framework:
- Sixth Grade: Earth and Science
- Seventh Grade: Living Things and Interaction with the Environment
- Eighth Grade: Physics and Chemistry
Mathematics
The Singapore curriculum is used in the middle school mathematics program for sixth and seventh grades. The curriculum is non-repetitive and comprehensive with an emphasis on problem solving. Ingenuity students complete Algebra I in eighth grade. Generally the math classes are small, 12 to 15 students with individualization for advanced students.
Middle School Locations
Mt. Royal #66 (Grades 6-8), Roland Park #233 (Grades 6-8), Hamilton (Grade 6)
Middle School Application and Selection
Students residing in Baltimore Metropolitan Area are eligible to apply.
Fifth graders must apply by December 22 for sixth grade, and so on. Applications received after December 22 may be reviewed during the summer if there are openings. Applications can be obtained:
- Online. (Click Here for Applications).
- Baltimore City Elementary Schools.
- By mail. Please call the Ingenuity admission office and request an application, 410-662-8665.
Selection is based on the completed application, teacher recommendations, report card grades, and standardized test scores. If an applicant has not taken a standardized test or the scores are not available, the applicant will be required to take a test administered by the Baltimore City Public School System.
Applicants must have E’s and G’s on the 4th and 5th grade report cards, standardized test scores, reading composite and mathematics composite, at the 80th percentile or higher, and excellent teacher recommendations. Applicants will be ranked with the highest-scoring student as #1 and so on. The highest-ranking students will be offered their first choice school then the next ranking students their second choice school until the classes are filled. Students who are wait listed will be notified by rank if there is an opening.
Applicants will be notified of admissions decisions by April 1.
Standards for Middle School Students
The philosophy of the Ingenuity Project® is to nurture, develop and encourage the Ingenuity student. In keeping with this philosophy, a student who continues to meet the standards of the program is accepted for all three middle school years. Students who wish to continue with Ingenuity may apply for the high school Ingenuity Project® at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute.
Ingenuity students are expected to have excellent attendance with no unexcused absences. This includes summer programs for Ingenuity when required. Students are expected to maintain a demeanor that is respectful of fellow students and teachers which honors the importance of the work. Students who do not meet attendance and behavior standards may be dismissed from the program at any time.
Ingenuity students are expected to attain an 80 average or above in the science and mathematics course work by accomplishing the following:
a. Consistent effort to do all homework. (Allowance is made for the occasional time when an assignment is late due to extenuating circumstances so that, at a minimum, 90% of homework must be handed in on time).
b. Corrections done promptly on all home work, quizzes and tests which teachers return marked.
c. Achievement of an 80 average or higher on unit tests.
If at any time during the year an Ingenuity student is not showing consistent effort to meet the standards, the student and his/her parents will be asked to meet with the school and Ingenuity staff to assess the student's difficulties and determine the necessary steps for improvement in academic performance. Students who are continually unable to meet the demands of the Project will not reenter the program for the subsequent year.
When a student withdraws or is asked to leave because he/she has not met the Ingenuity Standards, transfer to his/her zoned middle school will be recommended. If the student is attending his/her zoned school then the student will be assigned to another class.

2. HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
INGENUITY at Poly RESEARCH PRACTICUM
Off-campus research is a keystone of the Ingenuity high school program. The curriculum stands apart from other high school programs in its academic rigor and in the personal growth of the students. A major part of the Ingenuity curriculum is the Research Practicum performed under the supervision of mentor scientists. With completion of the research sequence, students will enter the Intel Science Talent Search, the nation's most prestigious, and financially rewarding, contest.
Research begins during the summer following the students' sophomore year and continues during subsequent school terms, with students who qualify having released time off-campus. This enables them to generate a topic, obtain sufficient data and observations, and write the extensive paper that is due by November of their senior year.

Ingenuity at Poly graduates are now attending Harvard University, Yale, Carnegie Melon, Cornell, The Johns Hopkins University, UMCP, UMBC and many others. The graduates have returned to tell us that they are very well prepared for their advanced college courses.
