ART, COLOR AND CHEMISTRY

For budding (and not so budding) Picassos! Where the minds of the scientist and the artist meet.

Description: This course has two components and is designed to fulfill a one semester (0.5 credit) fine arts requirement.

Students will work in the chemistry lab to unravel the mystery of how dyes and pigments react by making pigments to use for paintings or fabric coloring, while exploring the scientific principles involved. Students will study painting conservation and how conservators determine the ages of paintings. They will identify the effect of light and temperature on color. These and other topics will be elucidated in the class which has been planned in conjunction with the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Students will practice studio art from painting to sculpture. This is where the students' creativity can really soar! In the relaxed environment of the art studio, students will do a wide variety of artistic techniques from canvases on easels to plaster sculpting. Instruction will be given on executing portraits and many other art forms.
