OFF CYCLE ADMISSIONS POLICY
2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR
This Policy is for applicants interested in admission in 7th and 10th grades. Applications are not accepted for students entering grades 8, 11, or 12.
About Ingenuity Middle School: The Ingenuity Project is a citywide specialized academic program in Baltimore City schools. Students take advanced math and science courses during the school day in place of the standard curriculum and have opportunities for ongoing enrichment and support. The program is in four Baltimore City public schools (Hamilton, James McHenry, Mount Royal, and Roland Park). Accepted students transfer into their Ingenuity placement at one of these four middle schools for the duration of three years (grades 6-8). Students become members of these new middle schools and participate in standard or honors coursework (English Language Arts, Social Studies, and classes) offered within the school. Ingenuity is a good fit for students with a history of strong academic performance with the ability to grasp new material and concepts quickly.
About Ingenuity High School: Ingenuity at Poly continues to be a strong path to becoming one of Baltimore’s next leading scientists, exceptional mathematicians, innovative engineers, and high-tech entrepreneurs. Ingenuity is a good fit for students with a history of strong academic performance and interest in math and science, complex and logical thinking, persistence, and the ability to grasp new material and concepts quickly. Students should demonstrate mastery of Algebra I prior to entering the program. The Ingenuity math sequence begins with Honors Geometry or Honors Algebra II in 9th grade. |
Who Is Eligible To Apply Off Cycle?
The common entry points for most Ingenuity students are 6th and 9th grades. Off cycle applicants are students applying for entry into 7th and 10th grades. The off cycle process falls within a later timeline.
What is the Off Cycle Application Timeline?
Off cycle applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Applicants are typically invited to test in May or June. Offers are typically communicated in late June or July when available seats are confirmed.
What is the criteria for Off Cycle Applicants?
Ingenuity calculates a composite score for each applicant. Students are offered seats only if available and if the applicant’s composite score falls within a range of students currently in the program. For the 2023-24 school year, Ingenuity’s composite score will consist of the following.
- Final grades in Math and English Language Arts from SY 2021-2022.
- First quarter (or trimester) grades in Math and English Language Arts from SY 2022-2023.
- Ingenuity’s administered NWEA MAP Math and Reading Screener. NWEA MAP Math and Reading Screening Testing will take approximately one hour (30 minutes per test). Here is a link to the Practice Test and Videos for understanding the NWEA MAP.
- Ingenuity’s administered Algebra I test (high school applicants only). Practice test and answer key can be found here.
All Off Cycle Applicants must upload digital copies of the Report Cards in the application. The Report Cards must include a numeric grade and if the school only provides letter grades, the applicant must ask the school for the numerical equivalent using the Ingenuity grade conversion form. By applying, the applicant’s parent or guardian is giving consent for Ingenuity to receive other test scores or academic data from Baltimore City Public Schools to calculate Ingenuity’s composite score if needed.
